Assignment-1 STAIRS!

September 7, 2009

Hey Guys,

For my first assignment I decided to explore the different sounds generated by stairs. One of my favorite parts of stairs is the rhythmic sound of people walking up them, it usually has a very distinct pattern. One of the reasons for this is that all stairs have a standard riser height of 7 inches. Imagine what going up them would sound if this wasn’t the case. I would think a great deal of scruffs from stubbed toes and lots more swearing. Nevertheless, I tried to use all parts of the stairs including exploring the space encasing the stairs through louder sounds and impacts of objects. Some of the sounds are walking, some are dropping objects down stairs, and some are sounds created by the banisters and rungs. I used the sound of books in recordings in Green Library and sounds of rocks, pinecones, gravel, and other natural elements in the Geology Library as well as outside stairs. Here is the link :

Hope you all enjoy and good luck!

Good hi-hi soundscape with interesting sounds. Too bad most of them were recorded too soft. Also the descriptions could be better.
