Sounds of the dormitory…

September 7, 2009

I chose a dormitory for my soundscape environment, because it is encountered everyday by Stanford students, though we most likely don’t think too much of it. There are an incredible number of sounds in the dormitory that become familiar (but unconsciously!) over time and combine to create our senses of “home away from home” and school, from the dreaded alarm clocks to the sounds of peoples’ morning routines (showering, brushing teeth, etc) to that of computers and other technological apparatus (vacuums..). Over time, even sounds of loud piano playing from the lounge and loud conversations down a hallway just four feet away become, if not less annoying, actually necessary. So often I have moved into dorms early or moved out late, when no one else is around, and found the complete silence really…weird.

Nice sounds and good descriptions. Too bad most of them were recorded too softly.
